Jaap holds Master degrees in both Geodetic Engineering and Law and a PhD on systems of land registration linking these two fields. He is professor of Land Administration and Management at the University of Twente, with the ITC faculty. Within the faculty he is head of the department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-information Management (PGM) where he teaches and supervises MSc and PhD students in land administration from all over the world, particularly from Africa and Southeast Asia. He is associate editor of the journal Land Use Policy and within the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) he chairs the Advisory Committee on the Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM). As a member of the Netherlands Centre for Geodesy and Geoinformatics (NCG) he sits on the strategic platform of the national spatial data project Geo Together.
