Dr. Ruth Hall

Biography

Dr. Hall is an associate professor at the Institute for Poverty, Land, and Agrarian Studies at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and holds a DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford. She has published four books on aspects of land and agrarian reform in South Africa, focusing on land redistribution, restitution claims, and farm workers. Her current work focuses on land rights and ‘land grabbing’ and impacts on local people, a topic on which she is running several multi-country projects covering seven countries in Africa. She has co-edited several special issues of journals on aspects of large-scale land acquisitions, served on the African Union’s Land Policy Initiative scientific committee for its inaugural Conference on Land Policy in Africa, is co-founder of the Land Deal Politics Initiative, and coordinates the work of the Future Agricultures Consortium on land in Africa.
