Climate

Supporting climate action, conservation & environmental initiatives

Insecure land tenure affects the ability of people, communities, and organizations to make changes to land that can advance adaptation and mitigation (IPCC 2019).

Land tenure security underpins the success of many UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environmental policy initiatives:

For Climate Action, with Cadasta’s technology, tools, and training:

INDIGENOUS GROUPS & COMMUNITIES can map their community boundaries and defend their claims to resources such as land, water, forests, and spiritual sites.

NGOS can document, analyze, and monitor environmental changes, such as deforestation, and support communities and indigenous groups to defend their rights.

GOVERNMENTS can use the maps and data collected on Cadasta’s tools to formalize community and indigenous land claims.

Climate Examples from the Field

NBCA Clusa

MOZAMBIQUE

Cadasta collaborated with NCBA CLUSA to collect and manage information relating to land tenure, climate-smart agriculture, and food security projects that empower women farmers. Cadasta’s tools enabled efficient data collection and the issuance of DUAT land titles. The data are being used by the World Bank Gender Innovation Lab for a randomized control trial to assess the impact of land and climate-smart subsidies on women’s empowerment.

Daemeter

South Sumatra, Indonesia

In order to address the challenges of deforestation, peatland degradation, and wildfires within the context of palm oil green growth and biodiversity conservation, Daemeter partnered with Cadasta to collect data to support a sustainable palm oil management partnership model. Using the data collected, farmers were issued Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Certificates proving their palm oil is sustainably grown.

Micaia

CENTRAL MOZAMBIQUE

Cadasta partnered with the Mozambiqen organization Micaia to migrate, store, manage and visualize existing land and natural resource data from a project aiming to document and map access rights to Baobab products in central Mozambique. Our tools enabled Micaia to identify Baobab hotspot production as well as to improve conservation, land management, and community livelihood.

Cool Earth

PERU

Cadasta and Cool Earth are working together to build tools for Indigenous Peoples and local communities for mapping and managing land and forestry information, while integrating aspects of land tenure strengthening to provide greater protection of rights to these communities. Through this partnership, Cool Earth is providing advanced forest monitoring and reporting tools directly to communities on the ground in an accessible and interactive format, in order to halt rainforest destruction and protect the biodiversity of fragile ecosystems around the world. Using systems built by Cadasta, Indigenous communities in Peru and elsewhere are able to access and report on near real-time forest alerts and share those with Cool Earth and other stakeholders in a rapid fashion.
