This year marks a decade since Cadasta set out with a bold idea: to put people and their land on the map to unlock their land and resource rights for improved livelihoods and environmental health. From its beginnings in 2015, the organization has built partnerships powered by technology, data, and collaboration, helping millions of people secure their rights and their futures. Now, that commitment to trust, transparency, and impact has been recognized by Charity Navigator, the leading independent evaluator of nonprofits, earning a perfect 4-star rating.
What a 4-Star Rating Means
A 4-star rating signifies that Cadasta “exceeds or meets best practices and industry standards across all areas.” Cadasta received a perfect 100% rating for Accountability & Finance and 100% for Culture & Community, placing it among the most trustworthy and well-governed non-profit organizations in the world. For donors and partners, this is a clear signal that every investment in Cadasta is carefully managed, transparent, and has meaningful impact.
Where Technology Meets Tenure Security
Cadasta’s model is as innovative as it is human-centered. Through an Esri-powered digital platform, the organization enables communities, local NGOs, and governments to effectively map and document land and resource rights affordably and at scale. These digital records, often the first of their kind, give visibility and voice to people whose land rights have long gone unrecognized.
In Rwanda, for example, Cadasta is partnering with the National Land Authority (NLA) and Landesa to strengthen women’s access to land rights in rural districts. By training local government officials and community members to use digital tools for land data collection and management, the project is helping families — especially women-headed households — to document and safeguard their property rights. This data-driven collaboration not only promotes gender equity but also supports Rwanda’s efforts to build a more transparent and resilient land governance system.
Across the globe in India, Colombia, and Ghana, Cadasta’s Strengthening Land and Forest Rights program partnered with 13 grassroots organizations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America to protect land, forests, and Indigenous rights with tools, data, and training. This program equipped Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local partners with the tools, training, and pathways they needed to secure tenure, defend territories, and protect globally significant ecosystems.
Trust, Transparency, and Transformation
Cadasta’s perfect score is both a celebration and a commitment. It honors ten years of disciplined, values-driven growth and sets the bar for the next decade of systems change. Cadasta envisions a world where everyone enjoys secure land and resource rights that unlock opportunities for current and future generations.
That vision is only possible because of a foundation built on trust. Trust from communities who share their stories, governments who collaborate for change, and donors who invest in the belief that everyone deserves the security of land and home.
Cadasta’s four-star recognition is more than an accolade; it’s a reflection of its mission, affirming that transparency and accountability are not mere add-ons to impact, but the very core of how meaningful, lasting change is achieved.
