Cadasta Endorses The Pledge We Want: A Bold Call for Climate Finance at COP30

Sep 26 — 2025

Cadasta is proud to share our endorsement of The Pledge We Want campaign, which calls for a bold new funding commitment for Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples to be launched at COP30 in Brazil this November.

This announcement comes as Climate Week NYC 2025 draws to a close, a week where leaders from across the globe gathered to spotlight urgent climate solutions. The call to action from New York echoes loudly: true climate justice cannot be achieved without securing land and resource rights for the communities who protect our forests, biodiversity, and ecosystems.

We join a powerful coalition of allies, including the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), The Tenure Facility, the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, If Not Us Then Who, and many others, to urge governments, donors, and financial institutions to ensure that climate finance prioritizes land and resource rights, gender justice, and the protection of those on the frontlines of the climate crises.

According to the campaign, “every year, millions are pledged for climate finance — yet the percentage that reaches those who defend their forests, cultures, and territories with their lives is less than 1%. Now that regional direct funding mechanisms have been set up with proven success, their capacity for impact is infinite. Imagine what they could do with more. It’s time to deliver.”

For Cadasta, this pledge directly reflects our mission. Over the past decade, we have partnered with more than 100 organizations across 50 countries to document the land and resource rights of over seven million people. Time and again, we have seen how secure tenure strengthens climate resilience, improves livelihoods, and safeguards forests and biodiversity. But these communities cannot defend or expand their rights without adequate and sustained financing

By endorsing The Pledge We Want, Cadasta commits to amplifying the voices of our partners and the communities we serve, sharing data and evidence from the ground, and advocating globally to ensure that climate finance reaches those who need it most.

Now as the world looks toward COP30, we stand with our partners and campaign allies in demanding that climate recognize and support the urgent need to secure the land and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples, not only as a matter of justice, but as a cornerstone of effective climate action.
