Forest Land Rights & Climate Resilience

Project with Cadasta

ARCH-Vahini and Cadasta support 58,000+ families in Gujarat to secure FRA titles, improve food security, and strengthen climate resilience through land rights
In Gujarat’s forested tribal belt, tens of thousands of Indigenous families once labeled as “encroachers” are reclaiming dignity and recognition through secure land rights. Since 2019, ARCH-Vahini and Cadasta have partnered to scale Forest Rights Act (FRA) documentation using GIS tools and grassroots mobilization. Together, they have mapped 64,000+ parcels, benefiting more than 58,000 families, with 77% of claims approved. With new UK funding since 2023, the partnership has mapped an additional 17,000 hectares, enabling 13,000 more households—including 700 women-led households—to access land, resources, and government programs. Secured land rights have reduced conflict and spurred agricultural investment, food security improvements, and forest conservation across 20 villages. This initiative demonstrates how locally-led, technology-enabled approaches deliver both social and environmental resilience.
