Rainforest Labs, a joint initiative by Cool Earth and Cadasta, is closing the technology gap for Indigenous communities stewarding tropical forests. In Peru, the Awajún and Asháninka communities use the Labs’ connectivity, GIS tools, and training to monitor 11,000 hectares of rainforest, respond to alerts on forest loss, and document over 200 IUCN-listed species.
Building on this success, the model is now being scaled to Papua New Guinea. With support from the Swedish Postcode Lottery, Cool Earth, and Cadasta are establishing a Rainforest Lab that serves as a conservation hub, herbarium, and digital monitoring center for the Gadaisu, Sololo, Kondu, and Wadauda communities. The Lab will map an additional 12,000 hectares, ratify Forest Conservation Deeds, and train 40 local mappers.
By placing technology in the hands of forest guardians, Rainforest Labs advances Indigenous leadership in protecting forests, cultural heritage, and global climate stability.
